Real facility design requires additional space and infrastructure beyond active composting pads. Depending on your site and throughput, you will also need to plan for:
- Receival and pre-processing area — waste inspection, weighbridge, receival pad
- Decontamination — removal of plastics, contaminants, foreign objects (FOs)
- Shredding and size reduction — tub grinder, trommel, or chipper operation
- Mechanical handling — loader, turner, or in-vessel equipment turning circles and traffic lanes
- Curing area — material typically requires a further 4–12 weeks of curing post-active phase
- Screening — finished compost screening to specification (usually 10–25mm)
- Finished product stockpile — storage awaiting sale, testing, or despatch
- Buffer and setback distances — from property boundaries, residences, and waterways
- Leachate and stormwater management — bunded pads, drains, holding ponds
- Site access, parking, and amenities
Facility sizing is highly site-specific. Soil type, topography, local planning requirements, feedstock composition, intended end market, and regulatory conditions all affect the design. These figures are a planning conversation starter — not a permit or consent document.
